From Tradition to Technology: Enhancing our Communication Skills for our Student Population in a Post-Covid World

Purpose:

The purpose of the 2022 Faculty Retreat is to highlight current challenges facing our diverse student population, discuss faculty support through effective communication, and increase awareness of available resources.

Objectives:

  • Describe the diverse population of our current students;
  • Identify at least three challenges our current students have faced since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic;
  • Describe effective communication techniques that can be used in supporting our students with current challenges; and
  • Recommend the available Student Success Center and acknowledge resources available to students.

Presenters:

Dr. Hovey teaches and co-teaches Professional Nursing 1 and 2, collaborates with the Director to oversee campus operations, and meets with students to explore barriers to academic performance and build plans for success. Dr. Hovey has an extensive nursing background in gerontology and her research focuses on the older population and their caregivers. Currently, Dr. Hovey is collaborating with U.S. Congressman Bucshon providing insights and recommendations on the National Imperative to Improve Nursing Home Quality report, which was submitted to Congress by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Dr. Hovey’s goals are to raise awareness of 1) the bias attitudes society, healthcare providers, and individuals have toward older people and 2) the struggles faced by formal and informal caregivers for this population with an overarching goal of improving the quality of care for older adults.
