Fellowships
Fellowship programs are designed for RNs and APRNs to transition into a distinct specialty.
NP Fellowship in Cardiology
The Nurse Practitioner Fellowship in Cardiology is a comprehensive, 12-month program that prepares postgraduate NPs to apply critical thinking skills and increase confidence to practice in cardiovascular specialty areas. The curriculum is based on core competencies that include knowledge, skills, and understanding of health care areas.

AdvancingPractice Fellowship
Advancing Practice is a one-year, paid fellowship that builds on nurse practitioner and nurse midwifery academic programs to prepare recently graduated NPs and CNMs to become expert clinicians and nursing leaders. It is for practitioners who are passionate about community health and serving diverse, under-resourced populations.
Erie Family Health Centers, a federally qualified health center in Chicago with more than 87,000 patients, hosts AdvancingPractice. The fellow will pursue didactic education, quality-improvement projects and clinical practice, including providing intrapartum and postpartum care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The fellow will be an employee of Erie Family Health Centers with full-time salary and benefits, but will always be supported by an experienced preceptor.
UIC Nursing contact: Sarah Fitz, DNP, APRN, Fellowship Academic Coordinator
Psych Mental Health NP/VA Residency Program
In partnership with Jesse Brown VA Medical Center’s Office of Academic Affiliations, UIC Nursing offers a 12-month, postgraduate residency with intensive clinical and academic experiences transitioning into professional roles as psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners. The program supports a vision to transform the care of veterans and their families by educating compassionate advanced-care providers.
The residency program provides mentorship and fosters a supportive interprofessional learning environment that will facilitate the development of novice clinicians into competent, confident, independent practitioners, able to address the mental health care needs of veterans. Residents will be provided opportunities to accelerate the growth of their skills in patient-centered care, operational services, and leadership—all qualities that can be applied to address the complex mental health needs of adult patients in any practice setting.
UIC Nursing contacts: Cynthia Taylor-Handrup, DNP PMHCNS-BC, Academic Affiliate Residency Co-Director; and Jesse Herron, DNP, PMHNP-BC, Residency Director
