Colleen Corte appointed director of PhD program
Colleen Corte, PhD, RN, has been appointed director of the PhD Program at UIC's College of Nursing.
Corte is a much appreciated mentor to PhD students--encouraging and supporting them in their educational program as well as their development as nurse scientists. She regularly meets with her PhD students to provide the guidance and infrastructure to prepare presentations and publications to disseminate their research as well as prepare applications for funding to support their research endeavors. Evidence of her excellent mentoring was recently recognized by UIC with a 2017 Graduate Student Mentor Award.
Corte is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and has received numerous other accolades and awards from the International Nurses Society on Addictions, MNRS, and the Pinnacle Award for Exceptional Nurse Leaders from UIC CON. She currently is the Associate Head, Department of Health Systems Science.
Corte's program of research addresses prevention of the development of alcohol use disorders by inhibiting the formation of a " ?drinker identity'--a powerfully predictor of alcohol use. Remarkably, she and her colleagues have found evidence of an emerging drinker identity in children as young as 9-12 years of age. They have focused on identifying modifiable precursors of the drinker identity in a variety of samples -- children, adolescents, and young adults. Corte has most recently extended her research to focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people because of their higher prevalence of heavy drinking and alcohol problems.
