Barrera named director of the RN to BSN program
Gloria E. Barrera, MSN, RN, PEL-CSN, was named sole director of the RN to BSN Program after three years as co-director.
The RN-BSN online completion program at UIC Nursing allows practicing registered nurses to continue their education.
Barrera has been a registered nurse for 17 years and has extensive experience in school nursing and trauma nursing. During her tenure as co-director, she has helped expand enrollment in the RN to BSN program from around 200 to more than 500 students, making it the largest program in the college.
Barrera’s co-director, Kate Tredway, MS ’97, RN, MBA, is retiring after 27 years at UIC Nursing. Under Tredway’s leadership, the program went from a campus-bsaed offering at UIC Nursing Quad Cities to its current status as one of the top RN to BSN programs in the country.
The program was ranked No. 3 in the nation in U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 ranking of Best Online Bachelor’s Degree Programs. The ranking included UIC’s other two online bachelor’s programs in business administration and health information management.
