Dr. Puchalski is a neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) with more than 30 years of nursing experience in the maternal-child nursing specialty.  Clinically, she practices as a neonatal nurse practitioner with the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago at Northwestern Medicine’s Central DuPage and Delnor Hospitals. Her doctoral work focused on addressing the rapidly increasing incidence of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) which has been identified as a national healthcare crisis. She developed an evidence-based practice change project designed to increase consistency in treatment for infants with NAS through the implementation of a protocol, along with education to increase healthcare provider knowledge as well as sensitivity to the signs and symptoms of withdrawal in infants with NAS. In 2014, Dr. Puchalski was awarded the Procter & Gamble Doctor of Nursing Practice Post Master's Scholarship through the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the March of Dimes Graduate Nursing Scholarship to support her doctoral work in evidence-based care that improves outcomes for infants with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, a nationally recognized healthcare crisis. She continues this critical work by serving on the Illinois Department of Public Health Statewide NAS Committee and the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative.

Dr. Puchalski’s is a passionate advocate for neonatal pain management.  She co-authored the N-PASS: Neonatal Pain, Agitation and Sedation Scale, one of the most widely utilized neonatal pain scales nationally and has lectured nationally on the topic of neonatal pain management. She delights in developing engaging presentations and is the designer of the visual presentations for all education modules of the globally-recognized S.T.A.B.L.E.® Program.

As Director of the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Doctor of Nursing Practice Program at UIC, Dr. Puchalski inspires a new generation of neonatal nurse practitioners to provide the highest level of care to babies and their families.
