Join this group and our guest speakers Juana Ballesteros, BSN '99, RN, MPH, and Carmen Vergara, BSN '04, MPH, to understand:

  1. what community means in this context;
  2. community organizing frameworks and best practices, then and now;
  3. community-engaged research and community-based participatory research; and
  4. COVID-19's disproportionate impact on the Latinx community and the best community organizing, advocacy and response efforts to address this

Juana Ballesteros, BSN '99, RN, MPH | Manager for Community Public Health Outreach | Illinois Department of Public Health

In her role with IDPH, Ballesteros plans and ensures effective outreach to Illinois' diverse communities. She also reviews and recommends positions on related state and federal legislation. She co-chairs IDPH's Health Equity Council, increasing the department's capacity to address health equity.

Carmen Vergara, BSN '04, MPH | Chief Operations Officer | Esperanza Health Centers

Vergara has spent her entire healthcare career working for underserved communities. Recognizing the importance of Latinx representation within the healthcare profession and leadership landscape, she makes time to coach and mentor young professionals.
