MNHRC Presents: The Nurses of Pearl Harbor
March 17, 2022
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Hosted by Midwest Nursing History Research Center, UIC College of Nursing
UIC MNHRC Director Gwyneth Milbrath, PhD, RN, MPH, will give a presentation describing the preparation, response and lessons learned from the actions of the military nurses at Pearl Harbor following the Japanese attack.
On December 7, 1941, the Japanese military launched a massive attack on the U.S. Pacific Forces stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Over 2,400 American soldiers died that day, and many others were severely wounded. Inexperienced and unprepared Army and Navy nurses were responsible for triaging, stabilizing, caring for and comforting thousands of wounded men at three Army hospitals, a Naval hospital and aboard a hospital ship stationed in Pearl Harbor itself.
