Associate professor Sarah Abboud, PhD, RN, was selected as an outstanding Emerging Scholar in UIC’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Faculty Award competition for 2024.
Abboud is only the second recipient of the award, which recognizes extraordinary contributions and initiatives in diversity, equity, and inclusion, which have helped transform UIC and the communities it serves. According to the award notification letter, these include her, “unique focus on intersectionality and justice in [her] work with LGBTQ+ migrant populations and Arab queer communities in Chicago and the global south, as well as [her] devotion to mentorship of UIC students with marginalized identities.”
In her research, Abboud aims to develop evidence-based programs and interventions to improve health outcomes among first- and second-generation Arab immigrants in the U.S. She is one of few Arab scholars to explore sexual health at the intersections of immigration, gender, sexual orientation, and ethnic identity in this population.
She will receive a cash award and be recognized at the annual Faculty Awards Ceremony and Reception on in February 2025.
