Terri E. Weaver

The UIC College of Nursing is delighted to share two impressive recognitions for Dean Terri E. Weaver, PhD, RN, FAAN.

International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame

Weaver was one of a select group of scientists to be inducted into the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place July 29 in Dublin during Sigma Theta Tau’s 28th International Nursing Research Congress

Created in 2010, the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame recognizes nurse researchers who have achieved significant and sustained national or international recognition and whose research has improved the profession and the people it serves. This certainly describes Weaver’s contributions.

Weaver is one of the world’s preeminent sleep researchers, having made seminal contributions in obstructive sleep apnea, which affects roughly one-quarter of the U.S. population. Her landmark study is the CPAP Apnea Trial North American Program (CATNAP), published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (2012). This randomized clinical trial is the largest efficacy study of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) ever conducted in mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea and has changed the way sleep is treated in clinical practice.

Having demonstrated that CPAP improves functional status and neurobehavioral performance, as well as blood pressure and mood, Weaver’s work provided justification for reimbursement for CPAP use by Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act, based on the demonstration of therapeutic outcomes.

This is the fourth consecutive year that a UIC nursing professor has been named to the Hall of Fame. Professor Eileen Collins was honored in 2016; then-professor (now emerita) Tonda Hughes, PhD ’89, was honored in 2015; and professor and associate dean for research Carol Ferrans, PhD ’85, MS ’82, was honored in 2014.

AACN Board Appointment

Weaver has also been elected to serve a two-year term as a member-at-large on Board of Directors and Nominating Committee of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. The results of the organization’s 2017 election were announced in February and represent the votes of nearly 75% of all member deans from the nation’s nursing schools with baccalaureate and higher degree programs.

Prior to this selection, Weaver served AACN on the Nominating Committee, the Hot Topics Conference Planning Committee, and as a mentor in the New Deans Mentoring Program.

Weaver joined UIC Nursing as dean in 2010. Before that appointment, she was the Ellen and Robert Kapito Professor in Nursing Science and served for eight years as chair of the Biobehavioral Health Sciences Division at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.
