Shamatree Shakya, PhD, is joining the UIC College of Nursing Department of Biobehavioral Nursing Sciences as a postdoctoral scholar under the Bridge to Faculty program, a recruitment program designed to attract underrepresented scholars to UIC.

The goal of the program is for scholars to directly transition to a tenure-track junior faculty position after two years.

Shakya is originally from Nepal, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. Her work as a bedside nurse in a neurological unit sparked her research interests in understanding and managing cardiometabolic health, multimorbidity and geriatric disorders.

She earned her doctorate from Duke University, where she focused on understanding biological and psychosocial determinants of frailty in the context of social determinants of health. Her long-term research goals are to develop biobehavioral and mobile health interventions to manage chronic cardiometabolic diseases and related syndromes and to promote healthy aging.
