Janna Stephens named Population Health Nursing department head

Janna Stephens, PhD, RN, was appointed head of the Department of Population Health Nursing Science, one of UIC College of Nursing’s three academic departments.

Stephens, who was previously associate professor at The Ohio State University College of Nursing, has focused her research on cardiovascular disease prevention in underserved populations. She is principal investigator on an NIH-funded grant to reduce cardiovascular risk factors in Black young adults.

“Dr. Stephens brings significant experience as a leader in teaching, mentorship, curriculum development, research, and service to the department head position,” says UIC Nursing Dean Eileen Collins,PhD, RN, FAAN, ATSF.

Stephens received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Cincinnati and she received her PhD in nursing from Johns Hopkins University.

In 2023, she received the Health of Diverse Populations RIIG Mid-Career Investigator Award from the Midwest Nursing Research Society. Her scholarship and leadership skills have been recognized at The Ohio State University with her involvement in the FAME (Faculty Advancement, Mentoring & Engagement) leadership program and as an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fellow.

Her appointment at UIC Nursing took effect Aug. 16.
