Karly Schmitz: A patient’s advocate
body Heading link
I would like to start by saying thank you for your generous investment in my education. I could not be more excited to start my lifelong career in nursing while staying close to home. I chose to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing because in the past I had health issues that required plenty of medical visits. During these visits, the nurses always set the pace and the mood for how the appointment would go. It is my desire to be the nurse that is welcoming and communicates with the patients and doctors in an effective way. It is a nurse’s job to be the patient’s advocate and I wish to be just that.
During my time in high school I spent lots of time volunteering with younger kids and am interested in pediatric nursing. No matter what path I decide to take upon graduation, I trust that the UIC College of Nursing program will prepare me well.
I am fortunate enough to have parents who are helping me financially throughout college. Because I am not receiving any federal aid, this scholarship, along with others, will be an enormous help. Thanks to scholarships, I will likely be able to graduate from college without taking on any student loans. This is a huge relief for both me and my family and I cannot thank you enough.
