Associate professor Mary Dawn Koenig, PhD, RN, FACNM, and alumna Sherri Mendelson, PhD, MS ’84, BSN ’77, were inducted as Fellows of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses.
The Association for Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses is a national professional organization that empowers and supports nurses caring for women, newborns and their families. Fellows are nurse leaders who have made substantive and sustained contributions to the health of women and newborns beyond the expectations of their role.
Koenig and Mendelson were among 14 honorees inducted at the organization’s 2024 convention in Phoenix from June 7-11.
Koenig, a certified nurse midwife, investigates innovative, safe, and effective therapies to optimize iron bioavailability in maternal and fetal systems. Koenig recently received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the American College of Nurse-Midwives. She was also featured in UIC’s SparkTalks series, which allows faculty presenters from across campus to give 3-minute lightning talks about their work.
Koenig was also appointed to the at-large director position on the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses Board of Directors.
Mendelson is a lecturer at California State University, Northridge, and previously led nurse research at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, California, as a nurse scientist and Magnet program director. She and her husband created the Tom and Sherri Mendelson PhD Awards with an endowed gift to support nursing research at UIC Nursing.
