Leah Burt, PhD ’20, MS ’10, APRN, ANP-BC, received the 2023 Emerging Leader (“Rising Star”) Award from the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine at the organization’s annual conference in Cleveland, Ohio, on Oct. 10.

Burt, a UIC Nursing clinical assistant professor and the director of the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program, is the first nurse to be recognized with an achievement award in the history of the organization.

This award is given to an early career medical professional who has demonstrated a consistently high level of achievements in research, quality improvement, and patient engagement, in addition to strong leadership and a potential for making a significant impact on the field.

Burt, a former Fellow in Diagnostic Excellence with the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine, maintains an active clinical practice within the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System’s Department of Emergency Medicine.

She created a first-of-its kind tool to help improve diagnostic competency within the context of health care simulation called the Diagnostic Competency During Simulation-based learning tool. She published the results of a pilot study of her tool in the March-April issue of the Journal of Professional Nursing.
