A new painting called, “Compassion,” was unveiled on Monday in the first-floor student lounge of the Chicago campus.

The artist, Sister Mary Southard of St. Joseph, attended the event. Her paintings and sculptures reflect her close connection to the natural world and the larger universe.

“Her work emphasizes themes of environment, Mother Earth, and healing—aligning beautifully with the nursing profession’s values, which is why we felt her art would be a meaningful addition,” said Rose Hernandez, PhD, FAHA, associate dean for equity and inclusion.

Hernandez said it’s important for the student lounge to feature artwork because “art, in its truest form, has the power to reflect our deepest values.”

Speaking to students who attended the event, she said that “compassion” is an essential quality that underpins everything they will do as nurses.

“This painting will serve as a reminder as you’re sitting here studying, and walking the halls, of the importance of empathy, humility and kindness,” Hernandez said.

Southard lives in La Grange Park, Illinois, where she also has her studio.
