Prof’s humanitarianism recognized by Institute of Medicine of Chicago
Susan M. Walsh, DNP '14, MS '00, BSN '80, CPNP-PC, UIC College of Nursing clinical assistant professor, has received the 2018 Institute of Medicine of Chicago Global Humanitarian Award.
Walsh is the director of the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Acute and Primary Care programs and the associate director of the Global Health Leadership Office.
In the letter informing Walsh of her award, Cheryl Irmiter, executive director of the Institute of Medicine of Chicago, wrote: "This award to you is one more demonstration that your colleagues acknowledge and thank you for providing voluntary, longstanding and international humanitarian health service(s)."
Walsh has done extensive volunteer work in Haiti, leading healthcare teams there since 2006. She was there in 2010 when the catastrophic earthquake struck and wrote about it in her 2011 book, Walking in Broken Shoes: A Nurse's Story about Haiti and the Earthquake. She is the liaison for Interprofessional Service Learning in Haiti for both students and faculty.
Walsh was given her award at the 103rd annual meeting and awards dinner of the Institute of Medicine of Chicago on Thursday, June 7.
