UIC Nursing clinical assistant professor Rebecca Vortman, DNP ’17, RN, CNOR, NEA-BC, has launched The Stitch, an online, interactive digital community for novice perioperative nurses and the educators and preceptors who support them.
Vortman is serving as associate editor for the e-zine, published on the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) website.
As Vortman explained in an introductory video posted to Facebook, The Stitch is a place to, “gather and share stories that happen to all of us, with the ultimate goal of supporting you as you journey through your perioperative career.”
It departs from the more traditional content offered in AORN Journal or Outpatient Surgery Magazine, Vortman says, by offering “practical tips and relatable experiences,” including an advice column, short educational videos, practical tips from peers, a comic, games and downloadable resources to apply in practice.
“It’s never fun to be new and there’s so much to learn in the ‘OR’ and we just want you to feel supported,” she says in the welcome video.
There’s also a section explicitly aimed at nurse educators and preceptors looking for new ways to provide education to novice nurses.
Vortman says what she loves best about the forum is that the community will drive the content.
“Novice perioperative nurses are encouraged to share their stories and experiences in articles and videos, request advice from the Masked Maven in our advice column, or submit topic requests and suggestions to TheStitch@aorn.org.”
