World-renowned scientist to join nursing faculty

As part of a University of Illinois System initiative to recruit world-class faculty, the UIC College of Nursing has hired Ardith Z. Doorenbos to join the Department of Biobehavioral Health Science as a Nursing Collegiate Professor. She will also serve as the director of palliative care in the University of Illinois Cancer Center.
Doorenbos is currently a professor at the University of Washington and an internationally-recognized for her research on pain, palliative care and symptom management. She is one of the first seven professors to be hired under a three-year, $60 million systemwide initiative, the President’s Distinguished Faculty Recruitment Program, which is intended to woo faculty of national and international distinction in a broad range of disciplines.
“I am elated that we have been able to recruit such a talented individual who will greatly contribute to our research enterprise as wel las the activities of the cancer center,” says UIC College of Nursing Dean Terri Weaver. “It is a source of great pride that our college was one of the first to garner significant matching funds from the President’s Distinguished Faculty Hiring Program.”
Doorenbos’ recent work focuses on testing integrative therapies for military service members as well as adolescents with chronic pain who are at risk for opioid abuse.
Not only a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, Doorenbos will also be inducted next month in the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame. She has received more than $37 million in research funding from sources such as the National Institute of Nursing Research and the National Cancer Institute and has current funding of more than $11 million.
