About

Dr Sadandaula Rose Muheriwa-Matemba, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing, Human Development Nursing Science department. Dr Muheriwa-Matemba completed her undergraduate Nursing and Midwifery programs and Masters in Midwifery program at the University of Malawi, Kamuzu College of Nursing, currently known as Kamuzu University of Health Science. She earned her Ph.D at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health studies in Florida, and completed her postdoctoral training at the University of Rochester School of Nursing, New York. Dr Muheriwa-Matemba is a Harriet J. Kitzman Fellow in Interdisciplinary Sexual Health and HIV Research and has held a faculty appointment at the University of Malawi, Kamuzu College of Nursing.

Dr. Muheriwa-Matemba’s research integrates childhood development, sexual health literacy, nursing and midwifery, and community-based participatory approaches into intervention development that promote young adolescents’ sexual health development and wellness. Utilizing socioecological and positive youth development models, ConNECT and Early Adolescence frameworks, Dr. Muheriwa-Matemba seeks to equip and empower young adolescents, 14 years old and younger with bio-behavioral sexual health literacy skills as they transition towards adulthood. She also aims to promote young adolescent sexual health literacy to parents/caregivers, individuals, and institutions entrusted with the care and well-being of young adolescents.

Dr. Muheriwa-Matemba’s current community based participatory research emphasizes qualitative research methods to better understand the sexual health development support for young adolescents,10-14 years old and how to adopt, adapt and implement policies and interventions for supporting young adolescents’ sexual health development. Her work focuses on understanding the perspectives and experiences of parents, adolescents, and practitioners in health care, schools, and community-based organizations to ensure they are supported in building their skills and capacities to implement policies and programs that ultimately support young adolescents’ sexual health and well-being.

Dr. Muheriwa-Matemba’s program of research uses qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches to inquiry. She implements interdisciplinary equity-focused dissemination and implementation research in collaboration with community stakeholders, including adolescents and young adults who are influential in promoting young adolescents’ sexual health.
