Presentation description

Representation of under-represented minority (URM) faculty in the health sciences disciplines is persistently low relative to both national and student population demographics. Although some progress has been made through nationally funded pipeline development programs, demographic disparities in the various health sciences disciplines remain. As such the development of innovative interventions to help URM students overcome barriers to advancement remains a national priority. To date, the majority of pipeline development programs have focused on academic readiness, mentorship and professional development. However, a myriad of extra-academic factors (e.g., social, emotional, and contextual factors) have been linked to high attrition rates among URM students in higher education. The purpose of this presentation is to describe the influence of non-academic barriers on retention of under-represented students in nursing education and to provide recommendations for improving the nursing education climate for all students.

Objectives:

  1. Describe AACN Workforce Diversity goals
  2. Understand the current shortage of nurses from diverse backgrounds
  3. Understand social, emotional and contextual factors that serve as barriers to recruitment and retention of students from diverse backgrounds
  4. Identify strategies for reducing social, emotional and contextual barriers to recruitment and retention of students from diverse backgrounds.
