Faculty, students and alumni receive recognition at MNRS conference

Faculty, students and recent alumni received awards at the Midwest Nursing Research Society annual conference in Indianapolis, which took place from March 26 to March 29.

Awardees were celebrated at a Chicago Connection Reception, co-hosted by UIC Nursing and the Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, on March 28 in the Indiana Convention Center.

  • Assistant professor Randi Singer, PhD, CNM, and associate professor Mary Dawn Koenig, PhD, RN, FACNM, both received awards from the Perinatal, Sexual and Reproductive Health Research Interest Group. Singer received the Equity Award, which is given to a member who is making outstanding research, practice, and/or policy contributions to reduce health disparities and advance health equity. Koenig received the Senior Career Award, which recognizes a distinguished senior nurse researcher who has demonstrated exceptional and continuous contributions to research or scholarship and mentoring.
  • Urbana campus director Krista Jones, DNP ’11, MSN ’07, RN, PHNA-BC, FAAN, and PhD student Ayo Bodunde both received the Distinguished Abstract Award, selected through a rigorous peer-review process and representing exemplary research that advances nursing science and practice. Bondude’s abstract was, “Weight Management in Individuals Treating Mental Illness: A Scoping Review,” and Jones’ was, “Evaluating an Interdisciplinary Approach to Integrative Simulation for Nursing and Medical Students.”
  • PhD student Pia Pauline Lenon received the 2024-2025 Founder’s Circle Dissertation Grant for her work on Characterizing Trauma and its Impact in the Yurok Tribe.
  • Jen Glayzer, who completed her dissertation with professor Judith Schlaeger in December 2023, received the Symptom Science RIIG Dissertation Award, which recognizes the contribution of a recent PhD graduate whose doctoral dissertation is exceptionally meritorious and exemplifies high standards of scholarship and knowledge development.
  • Four faculty presented their research: Kamal Eldeirawi and Susan Vonderheid, as well as Jones and Koenig.
  • MSN student Min Su Kim received second place for her research poster in the MSN category. She was one of 12 students presenting posters throughout the conference. The others were: PhD students Maha Alotaibi, Olivia BimbiAyo Bodunde, Pia Pauline Lenon, Katelyn Sullivan and Wirampa Tanglai; DNP students Angela O’Bryant, Rebecca Quaid and Cassie Soltwedel; MSN student Shanell Alexander; and BSN student Janna Janthapaiboonkajon.
