Clinical associate professor Catherine Yonkaitis, DNP ’17, RN, NCSN, PHNA-BC, has been named the next editor of the NASN School Nurse, a peer-reviewed clinical resource journal of the National Association of School Nurses. Her appointment becomes effective Jan. 1, 2024.

Yonkaitis, who has been an RN for more than 35 years, was director of UIC Nursing’s school nurse certificate program for more than a decade. She is currently director of the Advanced Population Health DNP program at UIC Nursing and is a member of the NASN Board of Directors

In 2022, Yonkaitis won the NASN Recognition Award for her unique contribution to the association as a member of the Scope and Standards of School Nursing Practice writing team. Three years earlier, she—along with Robin Adair Shannon, DNP ’17, MS ’09, RN, NCSN, PHNA-BC—received the 2019 Presidential Recognition Award from NASN for their efforts as co-editors of the third edition of “School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text.” (Co-editor Janice Selekman from the University of Delaware was also recognized).

“I look forward to working with Cathy in her new role as editor of the NASN School Nurse,” said NASN CEO Terri Hinkley, EdD, MBA, BScN, RN, CA, in a news release about Yonkaitis’ appointment. “Her decades of experience on behalf of school nurses make her the ideal person for this role.”

A non-profit specialty nursing organization representing school nurses exclusively, NASN has more than 19,000 members and 50 affiliates, including the District of Columbia and overseas school nurses.
