UIC Nursing faculty have partnered with Kamuzu College of Nursing at the University of Malawi to help the college turn itself into a serious research institution Heading link
Over the years UIC Nursing has collaborated with Kamuzu College of Nursing at the University of Malawi to develop a critical mass of nurse researchers at KCN.
With support including the AIDS International Training and Research Program, a multiyear NIH Fogarty training grant, KCN has grown into a well-established research institution.
Chrissie P.N. Kaponda, a graduate of UIC Nursing’s PhD program, went on to establish the KCN Centre of Excellence in Nursing, Midwifery and Health Sciences Research in order to provide and develop institutional infrastructure for researchers at her college. Based on these long-standing relationships, UIC and KCN faculty have collaborated on a number of projects over the years, including these current projects:
Mobilizing Health Workers in Malawi Initiative
A rural project which uses the Mzake ndi Mzake (Friend to Friend) peer group intervention to mobilize rural health workers for HIV prevention.
CenteringPregnancy-Africa
A group antenatal model, which has been culturally-adapted to address Malawi’s critical shortage of health care professionals.
